Teams like the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions and Houston Oilers have all fallen from the top tier of the league. In fact, the Cleveland Browns have been one of the most notable teams to lose their status in the past decade.

Cleveland Browns
Cleveland’s NFL franchise was born in 1944 and played in Cleveland Stadium until 1995. The team had a long standing rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers. A new stadium was built for the team and they began play in 1999.
In the past three decades, the Browns have had a lot of ups and downs. They have missed the playoffs 27 times and finished in last place in their division 16 times. There have also been some comical pratfalls.
The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center has received a significant amount of calls since the signing of quarterback Deshaun Watson. Despite 24 sexual assault allegations, the Browns have yet to suspend him.
Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams were the first NFL team to relocate to Los Angeles. They began playing in the American Football League in 1936 and joined the National Football League in 1937. In 1995, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and in 2016, they returned to the Los Angeles area.
The Rams are known for their ability to reach the playoffs. Over the course of their 48-year existence, the team has reached the NFC championship five times and the Super Bowl twice. But their record has been mixed. They have won two titles (1945 and 1951), but they also haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1989.
Akron Pros
The Akron Pros were a semi-pro football team based in Akron, Ohio that originated in 1908. Originally a team named the Akron Indians, the team was later known as the Akron Pros and played in League Park, a stadium in Akron that opened in 1906.
In 1920, the Akron Pros became the first champions of the American Professional Football Association (APFA), which became the National Football League (NFL) two years later. The APFA was a loose confederation of professional football teams that were spread across the country.
The APFA was founded by Ralph Hay and representatives from 13 Midwestern football clubs. They met at Hay’s Hupmobile showroom in Canton, Ohio, to form the league.
Houston Oilers
It’s a sad day for fans of the Houston Oilers. After 36 seasons in the city, the team has been disbanded.
The Oilers had an outstanding run in the early 1980s. They were a consistent playoff team in the mid-1990s. But in the later part of that decade, the team suffered a major drop off in popularity.
This was in large part due to the team’s mediocre performance in the NFL. In fact, the team had a league-worst record in 1995.
In response, the team started a major rebuild. A new coaching staff was hired, and Buddy Ryan became the team’s defensive coordinator. Some assistant coaches began fighting on the sidelines.
Frankford Yellowjackets
The Frankford Yellow Jackets are no longer in the NFL, but they have a history in Philadelphia that stretches back 87 seasons. They were a professional American football team from 1924 to 1931. Before that, they were an independent football club.
Their name came from the area of the Frankford neighborhood in northeastern Philadelphia. They had a stadium in that same neighborhood. It was also known as Yellow Jacket Field. In 1926, they changed their uniform to royal/true blue.
During their time in the NFL, they won three championships. They also became the first NFL team to have a Latino player. Lou Molinet played for the team.
Detroit Lions
A lot has changed since the Detroit Lions last appeared in the NFL. This year’s team has a good chance of making the playoffs, but not the Super Bowl. The good news is that Detroit has some interesting players.
There are some big names on the roster. They’re not the only ones, though. Some of the rookies are doing their thing. And the team is going about things the right way.
It’s been a rough start to the season for Detroit, but the Lions have gotten the hang of it. Five of their six games have been wins. Despite being in the bottom half of the NFC, they are still making noise. Their most recent victory came over the Minnesota Vikings.
